What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractors work on all joints of the bodies, concentrating particularly on the spine. They use their hands to make specific adjustments (also known as spinal manipulation).
Chiropractic can also focus on soft tissue and muscle therapy. Chiropractic is well recognised as a first line treatment in low back pain and many eminent medical organisations recommend chiropractic as a treatment for low back pain.
Chiropractic is not just limited to lower spinal problems. Here at The Back Room Chiropractic Clinic, we treat many painful conditions. Ben and Faheem, our Birmingham Chiropractors, have helped many patients including those suffering from sciatica, neck pain, headaches and migraines, plantar fasciitis.
Is Chiropractic Care suitable for me?
Chiropractic is suitable for many different conditions, such as lower back pain, hip pain, knee pain, sciatica, headaches and migraines.
If you are not sure if your condition is suitable for chiropractic treatment, please contact Ben or Faheem for expert advice.
You can also check out our information page on the various conditions that are treated with chiropractic care and our other FAQs below.
How effective is Chiropractic treatment?
This is a question that we are often asked. The simple answer is that chiropractic is very effective. Chiropractic is a therapy used all over the world and can be used in a range of conditions such as headaches, migraines, leg pains and back pains.
It is also a commonly used therapy in elite sports and our Chiropractors treat professional footballers, cyclists and Olympic athletes.
Chiropractors are experts in the spine and nervous system; you may hear us referred to as “the back doctors”. Evidence has shown chiropractic to be strongly effective in treating conditions such as low back pain, shoulder pain and headache.
Chiropractic is recognised as a first line treatment in conditions such as low back pain. The Royal College of General Practitioners recommend spinal manipulation as a therapy for low back pain and the American College of Physicians have recently published guidelines recommending this therapy as more effective than painkiller tablets (oral analgesia).
We can help with back pain, shoulder problems, neck pain and whiplash type injuries, as well as numerous other aches and pains. If you are wondering whether chiropractic care could alleviate your symptoms, please contact us and Ben or Faheem will be happy to advise.
How many treatments will I need?
This will depend on a number of factors, such as the nature of and severity of your condition and how long you have had the problem. Every individual responds differently to treatment and benefit is always greater if you follow the advice given to you by the chiropractor.
Ben and Faheem, our Chiropractors, will tailor your treatment plan specifically to you and therefore each person’s treatment plan is different. The initial phase of treatment often needs to be more intensive to treat injured areas and help to restore the joints and muscles to correct function.
Most people will see an improvement within 1-2 weeks, and will then see the chiropractor less frequently as the condition improves. The long term focus is on maintaining correction and preventing problems recurring.

Do I need to contact my GP?
No, Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession, which means that you can get an appointment with us simply by calling us on 0121 439 2726 or contacting us online.
We would always recommend informing your GP that you are having chiropractic treatment.
We are happy to contact your GP on your behalf to inform them of your diagnosis and treatment plan.
Is Chiropractic covered by private health insurance?
We are registered with all the major health insurance providers, but would advise you to contact your provider prior to treatment to make sure you have cover.
Is Chiropractic treatment safe?
Chiropractic spinal adjustments are extremely safe when performed by a properly qualified chiropractor. Ben and Faheem, our Chiropractors, are trained to recognise conditions which require referral elsewhere, and they can treat you even after surgery.
Is Chiropractic treatment painful?
During the initial consultation, Ben or Faheem, our Chiropractors, will examine the area causing pain. This may cause some discomfort, but no more than using the joint in your day to day activities.
Chiropractic treatment is usually pain-free, unless an area is inflamed. Our treatments will be modified to correspond with every patient’s needs, to ensure the most practical and comfortable experience.
After the first treatment the patient may feel stiff or tired, but this is a natural response to spinal manipulation.
Can children have chiropractic treatment?
Children of all ages can benefit from chiropractic treatment.
Why do I need to do exercises?
Chiropractic treatment will help to realign the spine and surrounding muscles and ligaments to work at their best possible function. The exercises your chiropractor gives you are vital in helping aid recovery and maintain wellness. The best outcomes of chiropractic care are achieved when therapy is continued by you at home.
Can Chiropractic help osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a common condition where bones lose their strength, become brittle and prone to breaks. It is most commonly seen in women after the menopause.
Chiropractors can employ several gentle techniques to alleviate the pain that this condition can cause. Chiropractic care can also improve balance, strength and joint flexibility to help prevent falls.
What about a good diet?
A healthy balanced diet is the core of any good lifestyle and good nutrition has long been associated with good health.
Can I get over-treated?
The core of good chiropractic treatment is devising an individual treatment plan for each patient. A tailor made plan sets out the goals and outcomes in an appropriate timescale and it is not likely that you will get over treated.
